In a nation yearning for integrity, accountability, and transformative leadership, former Chief Justice David Maraga’s announcement of his 2027 presidential candidacy has ignited hope among Kenyans. His media appearance, where he declared his ambition to challenge President William Ruto, resonated with a populace disillusioned by corruption, economic stagnation, and governance failures. Maraga, a jurist with an impeccable track record, is positioning himself as a moral and principled alternative to Kenya’s entrenched political elite.

With his unwavering commitment to the rule of law and a vision to reset, restore, and rebuild Kenya, Maraga stands out as the nation’s best bet for redemption.

Here are seven compelling reasons why Maraga’s judicial legacy and passion for a better Kenya make him the ideal leader to address the country’s multifaceted challenges in governance, economy, foreign relations, and socio-cultural sectors, while warning against the dangers of opposition splintering that could hand Ruto an easy victory.

  1. Unwavering Commitment to Judicial Independence

David Maraga’s tenure as Kenya’s 14th Chief Justice (2016–2021) was defined by his fearless defense of judicial independence, a cornerstone of democratic governance. His most iconic moment came in 2017 when he led the Supreme Court to nullify President Uhuru Kenyatta’s election victory, citing irregularities in the electoral process.

This unprecedented ruling, which shocked Kenya and the continent, demonstrated Maraga’s resolve to uphold the constitution over political pressures. As he stated, “The greatness of any nation lies in its fidelity to the constitution, adherence to the rule of law, and above all, respect for God.” His ability to resist executive intimidation, when he publicly rebuked Kenyatta for undermining judicial autonomy, sets him apart in a political landscape often marred by subservience to power.

David Maraga’s judicial record is a testament to his integrity. He swore never to have accepted a bribe, a remarkable claim in Kenya’s corruption-laden public sector. His leadership in the Judiciary Committee on Elections ensured timely resolution of electoral disputes, reinforcing public trust in the judiciary. For a nation grappling with governance crises, Maraga’s proven independence offers a blueprint for restoring institutional integrity, ensuring that the rule of law prevails over impunity.

  1. A Proven Track Record in Fighting Corruption

Corruption remains Kenya’s most pervasive challenge, siphoning resources from critical sectors like healthcare, education, and infrastructure. Maraga’s career is a beacon of anti-corruption resolve. As Chief Justice, he collaborated with the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) and the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) to strengthen judicial governance and combat corruption.

His keynote address at the 2024 EACC-UNODC workshop emphasized corruption as a “disease that cripples society,” advocating for robust investigative agencies to slay this “dragon.” His commitment to enforcing Chapter Six of the Constitution, which sets integrity standards for public office, signals his intent to root out systemic corruption.

Maraga’s campaign promise to appoint competent, independent investigators aligns with Kenya’s need for a leader who prioritizes accountability. Unlike competitors reliant on wealthy financiers, Maraga’s pledge to crowdfund his campaign underscores his rejection of patronage politics. His clean record and moral authority position him to restore public trust in governance, ensuring resources are channeled to development rather than personal enrichment.

  1. A Vision for Youth Empowerment and Social Cohesion

Kenya’s youthful population, particularly Gen Z, has emerged as a powerful force demanding accountability, as seen in the 2024 protests against the Finance Bill. Maraga has positioned himself as their champion, condemning police brutality and the “terrorist” label placed on protesters. His statement, “Eighty percent of Kenya’s population are under 40… it is time we get the young people involved in leadership,” reflects his commitment to mentoring youth for leadership roles. This resonates deeply in a country where youth unemployment and disenfranchisement fuel unrest.

Maraga’s vision transcends Kenya’s ethnic divisions, a critical factor in a nation where tribalism often dictates political outcomes. His criticism of “ethnic-based politics” and his call for leadership based on integrity rather than “tribal math” offer a path to social cohesion. By fostering inclusive governance, Maraga can bridge divides and harness the energy of Kenya’s youth to drive national renewal.

  1. Economic Reforms Rooted in Good Governance

Kenya’s economy faces challenges, including high taxation, a collapsing healthcare system, and corporations relocating due to poor governance. Maraga attributes these issues to systemic corruption and impunity, which deter investment and aid. His experience chairing the 2022–2023 Police Reforms Taskforce, despite its unconstitutional ruling, showcased his ability to engage with systemic issues affecting public institutions.

His campaign emphasizes appointing competent professionals to key sectors, allowing them autonomy to deliver results, a stark contrast to the micromanagement plaguing Ruto’s administration.Maraga’s focus on restoring economic dignity, ensuring taxes translate into services like healthcare and education, addresses public frustration. His judicial experience resisting government pressure equips him to implement policies that prioritize economic stability over political expediency, fostering an environment conducive to trade and investment.

  1. Strengthening Foreign Relations Through Integrity

Kenya’s role as a regional trade hub and U.S. ally in counterterrorism requires a leader with credibility on the global stage. Maraga’s international recognition for annulling the 2017 election positions him as a figure of integrity, capable of restoring Kenya’s image tarnished by governance scandals. His judicial collaborations with UNODC demonstrate his ability to engage international partners in capacity-building initiatives, a skill transferable to diplomacy.

Maraga’s emphasis on constitutionalism aligns with global democratic standards, enhancing Kenya’s appeal to foreign investors and partners. By prioritizing rule of law and anti-corruption measures, he can rebuild trust with institutions like the IMF and World Bank, securing support for economic recovery while maintaining Kenya’s strategic importance in East Africa.

  1. A Grassroots Campaign for Inclusive Leadership

Unlike Kenya’s traditional political class, Maraga rejects reliance on “big money and tribal kingpins.” His commitment to a “Wanjiku-funded” campaign, referring to the ordinary Kenyan, signals a shift toward inclusive, people-driven leadership. His nationwide town hall meetings, starting in Nyamira, demonstrate his intent to engage communities directly, building a grassroots movement. This approach contrasts with Ruto’s top-down governance, criticised for sidelining public voices.

Maraga’s ability to mobilise diverse support, including from professionals like Nelson Havi, underscores his potential to unite Kenyans across regions and ethnicities. His coalition-building strategy, hinted at in his July 2025 statements, prioritises shared values over political expediency, offering a model for inclusive governance that can heal Kenya’s fractured polity.

  1. Restoring Constitutionalism and Institutional Trust

Kenya’s governance crisis stems from eroded institutional trust, exacerbated by Ruto’s administration’s disregard for the rule of law. Maraga’s call for Parliament to impeach Ruto for constitutional violations reflects his deep understanding of Kenya’s legal framework. His judicial reforms, including strengthening court administration systems, demonstrate his capacity to rebuild institutions. His campaign slogan, “Reset. Restore. Rebuild,” encapsulates his vision for a Kenya grounded in constitutionalism, where institutions serve the public, not the elite.

David Maraga’s experience resisting executive overreach equips him to restore checks and balances, ensuring Parliament and the judiciary function independently. His leadership promises a return to constitutional fidelity, addressing public grievances over impunity and fostering a governance model that prioritises human dignity.

David Maraga Should Hope For Opposition Unity

The 2027 election pits David Maraga against a formidable incumbent in President William Ruto, whose administration faces criticism for economic mismanagement, police brutality, and constitutional violations. However, Maraga’s candidacy exists within a crowded opposition field, including figures like Rigathi Gachagua, Kalonzo Musyoka, Martha Karua, Fred Matiang’i, and Eugene Wamalwa.

This fragmentation risks repeating the opposition’s failures in 1992 and 1997, when a divided opposition allowed President Daniel arap Moi to secure victories despite widespread discontent. In 1992, opposition leaders Kenneth Matiba and Mwai Kibaki split the vote, enabling Moi’s re-election with a minority share.

Similarly, in 1997, a lack of cohesion among opposition candidates handed Moi another term. In contrast, the opposition’s unity in 2002 under the National Rainbow Coalition (NARC), led by Mwai Kibaki, successfully ousted Moi’s regime, demonstrating the power of a united front. Maraga’s independent posture and refusal to join existing coalitions could inadvertently fragment the opposition, giving Ruto a clear path to victory.

His focus on forming a coalition suggests an awareness of this risk, but he must act decisively to align with like-minded leaders. A splintered opposition would not only undermine Maraga’s candidacy but also prolong Kenya’s governance and economic woes under Ruto’s leadership.

Why Unity Will Matter In 2027

David Maraga’s presidential bid offers Kenya a rare opportunity for redemption. His judicial legacy, marked by integrity, independence, and anti-corruption resolve, positions him as the leader to restore constitutionalism, rebuild the economy, and foster inclusive governance. His passion for youth empowerment, social cohesion, and grassroots engagement aligns with Kenya’s aspirations for a just and prosperous future. However, the opposition must heed the lessons of 1992 and 1997, uniting behind a single candidate to challenge Ruto effectively, as seen in the 2002 triumph.

David Maraga’s vision to “Reset. Restore. Rebuild” is Kenya’s best hope, but only a cohesive opposition can ensure this vision becomes a reality. Kenyans must rally behind Maraga’s moral leadership to reclaim their nation’s promise, lest division hands victory to an administration out of touch with their struggles.
