Positive leadership traits are important in managing one’s life and overseeing a diverse range of human activities. Experts maintain that it is through effective leadership that we can get things done and also bail ourselves out of difficult situations. Leadership is needed at all levels of society; from work to business and from family to national level leadership.

In a business setting, leadership is important in driving the mission, agenda, and overall objectives of the business. Without leadership, businesses move too slowly, stagnate, and sometimes become dysfunctional. As a leader at any level of society, you must understand your environment, the people in it, and how the environment affects the people within it. You will need to deal with the highs and lows of your domain and ensure that the storms do not rock your ship and derail you. This means that you will need to make key decisions for your team or your business and be able to get things done timely and effectively.

In the recent past, wholesale changes have swept across society and forced readjustments on multiple levels. While most of the changes and readjustments have been uncomfortable, it is imperative to keep up with the changes taking place within society. Below are 5 leadership traits for you to adopt and practice to lead effectively.

1. Clear Vision

Having a clear vision is an important trait to have as a leader. It is the clarity of your vision that will help you turn your theoretical goals and objectives into reality for your team or your business. Regardless of how big or how small your business/team is, having a clear vision is a must-have among many other leadership traits. As a leader, a clear vision will help you stay on course while also allowing flexibility to help you achieve the set goals and objectives.  In times of adversity, do not be afraid to reach out for help or reach across your team for support in completing aspects of your set goals.

2. Effective Communication

Effective communication is a very important leadership trait. As a communicator, you can concisely communicate your vision for your team or your business. This will make it easier for people to understand you and support what you do where needed. Being specific in what you say will prevent shortfalls within the communication process. The more people can understand what you say, the better. Communication happens daily and on multiple levels; as a leader, you need to fashion your skills in communication to always stay ahead.

3. Accountability and Responsibility

As a leader, being accountable and responsible for all your actions is a great leadership trait to possess. This means that you will have standard operating procedures for your team and yourself. Everyone within the team or business has to adhere to these procedures and work towards fashioning a cohesive and highly effective unit.

4. Active Listening Skills

Being an active listener is a useful leadership traits to have. This is all about being present and paying attention to both verbal and non-verbal communication. You also need to know when to speak up versus when to stay quiet. In most cases, you will need to be much better at analyzing situations and knowing how and when to drive meaningful conversations with people. You also need to learn to ask strategic questions during conversations rather than making demands and statements.

5. Humility

As a leader, you need to be aware of your weaknesses and your strengths. You also need to know how to empower those around you to complement your weaknesses while also benefiting from your strengths. Allow as much room as possible for feedback. Feedback is important in understanding what is going on around your environment and what you could be doing wrong. You won’t get that often without humility.

The above 5 leadership traits are merely a summary of the many attributes you need as a leader. In most cases, having all of them is a real struggle. You must practice and get to learn and practice slowly.
