Nairobi Police boss Adamson Bungei has said experts have been deployed to Moi Girls School after an evening fire destroyed one of the girls’ dormitories. Authorities are dealing with the fire’s aftermath but no serious harm was reported.
“The students’ belongings were destroyed in the fire but no injuries were reported. Experts are on the ground to tell us more,” said Mr Bungei.
Fire experts searched through a dormitory that was burnt down at the Moi Girls School in Nairobi to find clues on its cause even as parents to many of the students await a full report.
The team of experts included the police, County Government officials and electrical experts from the Kenya Power and Lighting Company (KPLC). Their primary objective is to establish what caused the fire.
The experts are rushing to find answers after parents flocked to the school on Monday night and Tuesday morning to know the fate of their loved ones.
On Tuesday morning, parents protested after they had allegedly been locked out of the school and were denied permission to talk to or see their children.
Experts On Scene At Moi Girls School Nairobi
Police and security officials present at Moi Girls School instructed the parents to wait until all analysis of the situation was done. The school administration is in turn organizing a meeting between the students and their parents to present a preliminary report and suggest a way forward.
On Monday night, the school administration put out a statement saying the fire broke out from Mt Zion Dormitory during meal time the students were being served their supper. Firefighters were called to the scene and students were instructed to keep off the student residences following an alarm.
All student valuables in the Dormitory were burnt and badly destroyed. The Mt Zion dormitory hosted 50 students.
Fire engines from the Nairobi City County arrived at the scene and managed to contain the fire at about 8 pm on Monday, police said.
All students were accounted for and hosted in different dormitories.
