According to the Communications Authority, between 30% – 40% of mobile phones in Kenya are counterfeit, often distributed through informal channels such as street vendors and unlicensed retailers. This translates to security threats, as criminals can easily breach the phones and access consumers’ personal data.

We are actively collaborating with local authorities, customs officials, and retail partners to prevent counterfeit phones from entering the supply chain. Through these partnerships, we’re making it harder for counterfeiters to distribute their products, ensuring that only genuine Nokia phones reach the hands of consumers.

While we continue our efforts to eliminate counterfeits, you can take simple steps to protect yourself:
- Buy from Authorized Retailers: Ensure you’re purchasing your phone from trusted and authorized distributors. This is one of the most effective ways to guarantee the phone you’re buying is genuine.
- Verify the IMEI Number: Every phone has a unique IMEI number. By dialling *#06# and cross-referencing the number on the manufacturer’s official website, you can verify that your device is authentic.
- Inspect the Packaging: Authentic smartphones and feature phones come in professionally sealed, high-quality packaging. If the packaging seems cheap, or if the logo or branding looks unusual, it could be a sign of a counterfeit device.
- Check Build Quality: Genuine phones are known for their durable and sturdy build. If the phone feels flimsy or poorly assembled, it’s worth reconsidering the purchase.

Educating consumers is a critical part in combating counterfeit devices.
