ways to naturally boost immunity

A sandwich. Eating healthy is one of many ways to naturally boost immunity.

Our immune systems prevent and limit infections. The immune system is made up of a complex set of organs, tissues, and cells that collectively work together to protect us from harmful invaders such as bacteria, viruses, fungi, and toxins. A strong immune system can effectively fight everything from the common cold or flu to harmful parasites and even cancer cells. In contrast, a compromised immune system leaves us vulnerable to all kinds of germs and reduces our chances of healing. As such, it is very important to learn and practice ways to naturally boost immunity.

There are multiple ways to naturally boost immunity. These range from eating healthy foods to living healthy lifestyles and from getting more and better sleep to building productive social connections. Adopting and continuously practicing ways to naturally boost immunity will significantly enhance our bodies’ natural defenses to fight illnesses.

Here are 5 ways to naturally boost immunity of the body.

1. Stay Hydrated at All times

Staying hydrated will not necessarily protect you from germs and pathogens; however, it is important to recognize that ensuring you are not dehydrated is crucial to maintaining healthy status. When you are dehydrated for long periods of the day, you are likely to experience headaches; these will in turn hinder important bodily functions like physical performance, digestion, heart function, and kidney function. These complications will subsequently lead to a high likelihood of contracting illnesses. Drinking plenty of water throughout the day will help clean out toxins and keep our immune system functioning. The goal should be to drink enough fluid daily to make your urine pale yellow.

2. Engage In Regular, Non-stressful Exercise

Regular moderate exercise (this is dependent on age) can give your immune system a boost. Moderate exercise includes activities like brisk walking, steady cycling, jogging, swimming, and light hiking are effective at helping your immune cells regenerate regularly. As targets, the average adult should aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate exercise per week. Mixing your workout regime will help you maintain your routine and keep your workout more enjoyable.

3. Keenly Manage Your Stress Levels

Long-term stress promotes inflammation and weakens the immune system. It also increases imbalances in immune cell function. Experts say chronic stress and inflammation contribute to the development and progression of many diseases. Activities like meditation, yoga, journaling, and other mindfulness practices or enjoyable hobbies can help you manage stress. If possible, be sure to allocate time each day for yourself and stress management, even if it’s just a few minutes of deep breathing or an evening walk.

4. Maintain Social Connections

Maintaining social connections and a supportive network can influence our immune systems. Studies show that strong social ties can boost immunity, just as isolation and loneliness increase stress and weaken our immune systems. While the field of study is often indirect, there are ongoing studies investigating the direct link between connectedness and health.

5. Limit Tobacco And Alcohol

Excessive alcohol consumption and smoking can weaken your immune system. Multiple studies done across the world have found that five drinks in a single session can suppress the immune system for an entire 24 hours. Smoking is also a significant contributor to a compromised immune system, with rheumatoid arthritis, an autoimmune disease, being a well-known byproduct of smoking. You can also contact available mental health support professionals to help you in your journey towards quitting smoking or drinking.

It’s important to remember there is no magic formula to boost your immune system. But, incorporating natural healthy habits into natural ways to boost immunity can strengthen your body’s defenses. Your immune system is a powerful ally and with the right support, you can help it perform at its best. And if you ever have additional concerns, consult your trusted healthcare provider.
