KCSE Results will be released on 8th January 2023 after the Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) completed its round of marking and results aggregation. This follows the release of the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) results last month. The KCPE results were the last of the 8-4-4 system; which has been replaced by the new competency-based curriculum (CBC) which will see learners transition to a 2-6-3-2 system. 8-4-4 has been in use in the country since the late 1980s and has been criticized for perceived shortcomings.
The release of KCSE Results comes on the back of wide criticism for how the National Examination Council handled the last batch of KCPE results. There were widespread reports of system failure and allegations of irregularities in the marking of the exams. Some students were allegedly awarded marks for exams they did not sit for. This prompted Minority Leader Opiyo Wandayi to table a motion in parliament calling for investigations into irregularities relating to and surrounding the release of KCPE Results.
Mr Wandayi says KCSE Results might face similar challenges – disparities in awarded marks and transmission challenges from the KNEC Portal.
“I am afraid that if we do not handle the issues surrounding the bungling of the last KCPE and the results, we should be prepared for a similar or even worse thing in the impending release of KCSE results,” said Mr. Wandayi during a National Assembly sitting in December.
The Ugunja Member of Parliament also raised concern over the company awarded the tender to print examination papers. He called for investigations into the tendering process and a detailed investigation into what went wrong.
“The Cabinet Secretary for Education alongside officers from his docket were in Parliament, and after lengthy deliberations, a lot more questions emerged. Instead of finding answers to the many questions that were lingering, he left a lot more questions,” he added – during a parliamentary sitting attended by Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu.
Critics are further calling for the government to acknowledge the failures of the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) and consider alternatives. This relates majorly to the Junior Secondary School setting where teachers are lodging complaints about delayed payments and contractual non-compliance on the side of the government.
After recovering from calendar disruptions occasioned by COVID-19, the Ministry of Education will be keen to improve its standing in the face of widespread reports of external forces (cartels) controlling or limiting control of various key functions of the ministry.
Mr. Machogu has revealed plans by the National Examination Council to have the results available to parents and students via a portal. Students and members of the public will be able to access the portal and download the results once they are released and made available by the ministry. It remains to be seen whether the traditional SMS streaming will still be available for the KCSE Results.
