Activist Shakira Wafula has announced her immediate resignation from the Political Committee of former Chief Justice David Maraga’s presidential campaign. Shakira Wafula, who rose to national fame during the 2024 Gen Z protests for her bold actions against police brutality, cited a divergence in foundational values and priorities as the reason for her departure.

This move has sparked widespread discussion about the stability of Maraga’s bid for the 2027 Kenyan presidency and its potential ripple effects. Shakira Wafula has been a key figure in Kenya’s civic and social justice scenes. As a fitness coach, community leader, and vice chairperson of Kikao, she advocates for wellness, civic education, and social impact.

Her activism gained momentum during the June 2024 protests, where videos of Shakira Wafula unmasking a police officer went viral, symbolising resistance against oppressive tactics.

Since then, Shakira Wafula has used social media platforms to rally Kenyans for justice, including calls for solidarity with global causes like Palestine.

Shakira Wafula and 2027 Politics

Her involvement in Maraga’s campaign was seen as a bridge to younger voters, bringing fresh energy to a team led by a veteran jurist. In her public statement, Shakira Wafula expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve but emphasised the need for deeper alignment on principles like integrity, transparency, and ethical leadership. She referenced the campaign’s slogan, “Reset, Restore, and Rebuild,” arguing that achieving these goals requires unwavering commitment to foundational values. “As our paths diverge on these principles, I hope my decision encourages meaningful reflection and a renewed commitment,” Shakira Wafula stated.

She extended best wishes to the remaining team, underscoring her ongoing dedication to a Kenya anchored in good governance and public service. David Maraga’s 2027 presidential aspirations represent a bold pivot from his judicial legacy to the political arena. The retired Chief Justice, renowned for annulling the 2017 presidential election results in a landmark ruling that upheld constitutional integrity, launched his bid in October 2025 under the United Green Movement (UGM) party.

Governance by Restoring Accountability and Rebuilding Institutions

Maraga’s campaign pillars focus on justice, inclusive growth, environmental sustainability, and anti-corruption reforms.

He has urged youth to register as voters, positioning UGM as a vehicle for a “green agenda” and systemic change.

Maraga aims to “reset” Kenya’s governance by restoring accountability and rebuilding institutions weakened by years of political turbulence.

However, Maraga faces formidable obstacles in his quest for State House. Kenya’s political landscape is highly competitive, with incumbent President William Ruto likely seeking re-election amid economic challenges and public discontent.

Other potential contenders, including opposition figures, could fragment the vote. Funding remains a critical hurdle; as a newcomer without deep-pocketed backers, Maraga’s campaign relies on grassroots support and fundraisers, which have yielded modest results so far.

Appealing to Kenya’s youthful demographic, over 75% of the population under 35, is essential, yet voter apathy and registration barriers persist.

Fallout Within David Maraga’s Camp?

Internal party dynamics and the need to build a broad coalition pose risks, especially in a nation divided along ethnic and regional lines. Shakira Wafula’s resignation could deliver a significant blow to Maraga’s efforts. As a symbol of Gen Z resilience, her exit signals potential internal discord and a loss of youth credibility.

Online reactions on X highlight concerns over funding shortages and misaligned priorities, with some users suggesting the campaign lacks resources to sustain key members.

This departure might erode momentum at a formative stage, when building a unified team is crucial. Critics argue it exposes vulnerabilities, such as over-reliance on high-profile activists, without addressing core operational issues.

For Maraga, who emphasises ethical leadership, this could prompt introspection but also deter potential allies wary of instability. Despite the setback, Shakira Wafula’s move underscores her commitment to principled activism. As Kenya gears up for 2027, her resignation serves as a reminder that successful campaigns must align rhetoric with action. Whether this prompts Maraga to recalibrate or further fragments his bid remains to be seen.
