Kenya’s ambition to become a leading automotive manufacturing and mobility hub in Africa received a major boost as the 27th Autoexpo Kenya 2026 officially opened in Nairobi, bringing together industry leaders, manufacturers, investors, and innovators from more than 30 countries.

The three-day exhibition, being held at the Carnivore Exhibition Grounds, has transformed Nairobi into a focal point for the global automotive industry, showcasing the latest advancements in vehicle manufacturing, spare parts, garage equipment, batteries, lubricants, commercial vehicles, motorcycles, and electric mobility technologies.

Speaking during the official opening, Samuel Karanja Njora, Secretary Administration in the State Department for Industry, reaffirmed the government’s commitment to supporting local manufacturing and strengthening Kenya’s automotive sector as a key pillar of industrial growth.

Njora said the government views the automotive industry as a strategic sector capable of creating jobs, attracting investment, and accelerating economic transformation. He noted that Autoexpo Kenya provides an important platform for manufacturers, distributors, and investors to forge partnerships and explore new business opportunities.

He encouraged local innovators, startups, and small-scale manufacturers to take advantage of the exhibition to learn from global technologies and identify opportunities for growth within the expanding automotive value chain.

The government official also revealed that the proposed Local Content Bill is nearing completion and will require a significant portion of vehicle and motorcycle components to be sourced locally. He noted that at least 14 motorcycle components are already being manufactured in Kenya, demonstrating the country’s growing industrial capabilities.

In a move expected to further stimulate local production, Njora announced that the government plans to prioritize the purchase of vehicles assembled within Kenya, helping strengthen domestic industries and support employment creation.

A major highlight of this year’s event is the introduction of EV Expo Kenya 2026, which focuses on electric mobility solutions. The exhibition features electric vehicles, motorcycles, charging infrastructure, batteries, and energy storage technologies, underscoring Kenya’s growing commitment to sustainable transportation.

The rapid growth of the electric mobility sector follows the implementation of the National Electric Mobility Policy, which seeks to encourage investment in electric vehicle assembly, charging networks, and green transport solutions.

Autoexpo Kenya Stakeholders Urge Local Sourcing

Representing the Automotive Parts Manufacturers Association, board member Margaret Muchoki praised the collaboration between industry stakeholders and government agencies in promoting local manufacturing and strengthening Kenya’s automotive ecosystem.

She noted that the association represents manufacturers producing a wide range of automotive components, including batteries, brake pads, filters, and motorcycle accessories. According to Muchoki, the exhibition provides an important opportunity to attract international investors while fostering technology transfer and skills development among local manufacturers.

Muchoki further highlighted the growing emphasis on local sourcing, saying Kenyan vehicle assemblers are increasingly being encouraged to procure components from local manufacturers, helping create jobs and expand opportunities for homegrown businesses.

Industry players believe the proposed Automotive Bill, currently in its final stages, will further strengthen local assembly operations and increase the adoption of locally manufactured components across the sector.

As thousands of visitors, exhibitors, and investors converge in Nairobi, Autoexpo Kenya 2026 is demonstrating Kenya’s growing potential not only as a market for vehicles but also as a regional centre for automotive manufacturing, assembly, electric mobility, and technological innovation.

Organised by Expogroup, the Autoexpo Kenya exhibition runs from June 3 to June 5 and is expected to generate new partnerships, investments, and opportunities that will contribute to the continued growth of Kenya’s automotive industry and industrial development agenda.
